For me (and, I guess, not only for me), the Ultima games are the ultimate experience in RPGs. Featuring a great depht in gameplay, and a fantastic blend of story and unfolding things, Ultima games (and especially Ultima V and VII) are true master-pieces of computer gaming.
The three ages of darkness have finished, now a golden one starts and with it a new way of living through philosophy and virtue. A call is sent to summon a new kind of hero, one that does not triumph through the sword, one that can become a spiritual guide and help others to walk the path, an avatar of the virtues.
After the events of Ultima VII, the Guardian takes a last chance action, imprisoning Britannia's Castle in a blackrock dome. But this powerful magic disrupts the fabric of reality and opens a gate to other worlds.
Many years after his last adventure in Britannia the Avatar is brought back by a mysterious apparition, and he appear at a bad place and moment. Thanks to it he ends accused of a kidnap and sent down to the Stygian abyss, from where it is not possible to escape.
A sudden magical calling brings you back to Britannia, where you find that the king has disappeared and lord Blackthorn, backed by the three mysterious shadowlords, has become tyrant of the kingdom and forced his vision of the eight virtues over of its inhabitants.
The avatar is summoned back to Britannia, but this time it is a trap set by the gargoyles, demon like creatures that have attacked the kingdom, starting a war that will only end with the death of the one they call the false prophet.
A few months after destroying the black gate the Avatar is sent to catch the leader of the conspiracy, who had fled to a lost land known as the Serpent Isle.
Basically the game system is the same as in the first part, but with some improvements. Mainly better graphics, noticed easily when equipping your characters and some hotkeys. But there is a big weakness added, linearity.

A mysterious being contacts you, the Avatar, menacing with a drastic change to the land of Britannia and, again, a gate is opened to carry you back to the kingdom, where nobody has summoned you as after two hundred years of peace the land is entering into a new age of illumination.
Ultima VIII - Pagan. The Guardian has banished the Avatar to Pagan, a world he controls. Now it is up to you (aka the Avatar) to make it back to your own world. You find yourself near the town Tenebrae which is ruled by Mordea - who is leading something best described as a terror regime. Among other things it's one of your goals to defeat her.
