Review by Mr Creosote (published 2000-03-22, last updated 2006-09-15):
A whole bunch of unvoluntary humor! This game confirm several cliches at once.

1. A movie conversion
The game has nothing (really nothing) to do with the film. Some very short video excerpts are shown betweenthe levels but that's all. A few characters and settings from the film show up but they are futile.

2. The basic concept
Last Action Hero can hardly be beaten when it comes to dumbness! Basically there are only two levels that are repeated again and again. In the first you drive a car and you have to kill another vehicle by ramming it from the back until it explodes every time. The top-down view is the even most bearable thing with it. It gets really annoying regarding the controls. All the time you will be stuck on street corners because of its woollyness.
The second part was probably supposed to be a classical fighting game. You walk from left to right and from time to time you encounter enemys whom you have to beat up. There are a few different moves but that does not make any difference. In this part there are even genious puzzles later: flee from a helicopter and do not touch the electric water!
The funniest point in this part is the player's sprite. It really cannot get more monkey-like.

3. The difficulty level
At the beginning you have 5 lives. Each time your car explodes or you get beaten up, you lose one. That will only happen 1 or 2 times to you. Both parts are so easy that I managed to solve the game within 20 minutes when I was first trying it! The driving does take some time but there are no real dangers. The fighting gets absolutely ridiculous when you have found out that you can push the enemy in the corner and beat him up without him having a chance to defend himself (i.e. after the first fight). Quite the right thing for people using the computer for the first time! It is really worth its money!

Especially precarious: Some time before the movie was shown, Sony acquired Psygnosis so that they could do conversions of their films. Sony obviously did not make sure that the designers watch the film or that the game is published at the same time as the film: The game was sold month later.
Good choice, Sony!
