Secret of Mana 2
Title Screen
Square 1995
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 6/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: SNES
This is, in my opinion, THE best game ever made for the SNES. It has almost everything:
-A good storyline, with 6 different beginnings (one for each of the 6 characters) and 3 different final areas. It will keep you in front of your screen for many hours, with the occasional unexpected event, and then, just when you think you've almost finished the game, you find out that you're only at about one third of the game! (Yep, it's WAAAAY longer than Secret of Mana 1) and that's just with one party, with 119 other possible parties still waiting to be tried, or, if you have too little time for that, 2 other game endings...

Only a few centuries ago, the humans have discovered space travel. They build a space station orbiting their home planet, Arth, and send out ships to scour the known universe for habitable planets. No, it wasn't a typo; the humans are convinced that their home planet is called Arth. What they don't know is that due to the rogue Crystal Planet, which has the capability to destroy a whole solar system, all races in the galaxy are in a permanent state of exodus, and during one such exodus the Earth and most of its colonies were destroyed, plunging the backward world of Arth into a dark age. Times change, and Arth is now as advanced as the Earth ever was, if not even more so. However, recently the star your planet is orbiting has destabilized, and ships that were sent out to find another habitable planet disappeared. You are a freshly commissioned captain of a small ship, with only one goal in mind: making money. Since your world needs you, though, you agree to do some exploration on the side as well. You'll soon run into questions you don't have answers for. Who are the Ancients? What is the Crystal Planet and how to stop it? Why did other races flee and why are some of them trying to wipe the humans out? All those and more questions are just the beginning of a story that offers up to 100 hours of gameplay that spans over 800 planets.

The Secret of Monkey Island
Title Screen
Lucasfilm Games 1991
Genre: Adventure

My name is Guybrush Threepwood. I want to be a pirate. What, you don't know what I'm talking about? Where have you been since 1990? The only excuse I will accept is this: searching treasure on a cut-off island with vegetarian cannibals, a hermit waiting to be rescued even though he has already built a boat and a giant monkey head!

Timequest

Legend Entertainment 1991
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 6/6

System: PC
Time certainly flies by... when I first started this site in the last millenium, Legend's Adventure games were pretty common on sites like this one. Not as common as the ones by Sierra, of course, but they could easily be found. These days (2006), you'll probably find a few of the later point & click style ones (Death Gate, Shannara,...) and if you're very persistent, you might stumble across the odd site which mentions the Spellcasting games. I blame this lack on the lack of actual collectors among the webmasters. If the only source you have for games to put on your own site are other websites, it's an automatic downward spiral concerning diversity.

Transport Tycoon
Title Screen
Microprose 1994
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 6/6
Language: English, Deutsch
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
The game begins with the founding of your company. You choose a fitting portrait, the company colour and of course the name. Then it immediately starts with your first funds. Similar to Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon, in which you could build tracks for your trains. In Transport Tycoon, you're not limited to railroad tracks for your iron horses. On the random map which is full of cities and factories, you can build a depot and bus stops, to transport citizens to the next town, for example. Alternatively, you can create a system of railway tracks through all cities with which you can not only transport people, but also goods like mail. For example, you can build a station near a forest and another next to a sawmill. Connect the stations and you can transport raw logs to the mill, which can be very profitable. In addition, you can conquer the skies with your planes or and waves of the sea with your boats. Either you're just transporting passengers, or you buy fitting vehicles for other goods. That decision is up tot he player.

Genre: RPG, Action
Rating: 6/6

Ultima VII, part 2: Serpent Isle
Title Screen
Origin 1993
Genre: RPG
Rating: 6/6
Language: English, Castellano
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
A few months after destroying the black gate the Avatar is sent to catch the leader of the conspiracy, who had fled to a lost land known as the Serpent Isle.

Basically the game system is the same as in the first part, but with some improvements. Mainly better graphics, noticed easily when equipping your characters and some hotkeys. But there is a big weakness added, linearity.
