ENIX-Always a company that was willing to make games that were...well, non-standard. Not that that's a bad thing. Certainly not in this case. EVO is one of those one-of-a-kind games that are fun to play, hard to categorize. And yes, I may be biased because biologists generally like tinkering with animals :)

[dregenrocks] The player has to explore the continent of africa in search for a valuable tomb containing the so called "Heart Of Africa". You start in Cairo or another main african city at the coast and buy some basic equipment like a canoe, weapons, tools, food and gifts. With this stuff you start to explore the inner land, by canoeing down rivers or just by walking through the deserts, jungles and wide steppes of the continent. On the way you discover famous landmarks to earn some money and meet villagers, to earn some valueable informations about hidden crates and treasures (i.e. gold, silber, ivory). For this you have to give other treasures or a lot of gifts instead to the village-chiefs, who tell you about those secrets. You will also trade for food and may need to get back to one of the harbour-towns to refresh (save game), get money and new equpment. This will become a "treasure-trade-circle" until some chief may tell you about the "Heart Of Africa", your goal to get riches of your ancestor...
One day, in the middle of 2000, I bought several magazines with demo cds on a computer fair. On one of those cds, I found the demo for "Majesty: the fantasy kingdom sim" and, mildly interested, decided to give it a try. The second I started playing the demo I was hooked, and the game hasn't left my harddrive since.
One of the easier games for the Vectrex, it is also the one that was in-built, instead of cassette-based. When the game starts, a UFO drops some mine-eggs. These eggs hatch into full-grown mines which move around, and which, if you shoot them with your space-ship, will explode and cause two eggs with smaller but faster mines to hatch. Destroy all mines to finish a level, but beware of the UFO which will return to lay some more mines each level! There are five types of mine, normal mines, mines that shoot back when destroyed, homing mines, homing mines that shoot back and invisible mines that shoot back.
Paratrooper is quite an old game (published in the same year as the much better-known Alleycat, 1984) and, as many of those games, graphically none too advanced but quite addictive.

Meet Plok, a rather strange fellow. He has a flag fetish, hates fleas, can shoot off his arms and legs and absolutely hates fleas. Did I mention that he hates fleas? If not, then... well, you get the idea. Plok wakes up one sunny morning to find that his most prized possession, a big square flag, has been stolen. Our brave red-and-yellow hero decides to go flag hunting, and sees his flag hanging on an island just off the coast. When, after much adventure (a level or eight) he has finally recovered his flag, he returns to his island, only to find that it has been overrun with big, ugly fleas! Of course, our intrepid protagonist immediately vows to rid the island of fleas once and for all...
When I started playing this game, I got hooked immediately. It just has...something that makes it addictive. What that is, I can't say.
For its time, it has very good graphics, almost as good as its successor, but it doesn't have great music to go along with it (except for a few major exceptions). The sound effects, however, are good, the combat system is great (Real-Time, with special attacks, throws with the glove weapon, numbers that indicate damage which are bigger if the hit is more severe, critical hits (i.e. Rabite gets whacked) while the enemies can also make criticals, you can move and swing/thrust/hit in all directions, and opponents actually fly back and fall to the ground because of the force of your hits. Plus, it just looks good ;)
