Barbarian: The Ultimate Warrior
Alternate Names: "Barbarian: Der Mächtigste Krieger"
Title Screen
Palace Software 1987
Genre: Action
Rating: 2/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: C64
To get the story over with: Evil wizard has captured the princess, oily muscleman carrying a huge sword tries to free her by first confronting the sorcerer's soldiers and then the evil master himself.

Border Zone
Title Screen
Infocom 1987
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 5/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
Border Zone is another of Infocom's IF masterpieces. That means it uses the greatest parser ever made. But that alone doesn't make a great game!
There are other things that cause this. First the plot. It is a spy thriller. With microfilms, evil agents, an assassination and all the other cool features you know from these old movies. Only that YOU are involved this time!

Buggy Boy
Title Screen
Tatsumi / Taito Corporation 1987
Genre: Sport
Rating: 4/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: C64
Racing on the C64 had a few problems, as you might remember. Games like these were hard to make due to the procedural nature of BASIC, and most of the racing game were really crap.
Well, you might just like to know that this thing is NOT a crap game at all. In fact, although featuring only 5 races, Buggy Boy is some of the most interesting pieces of software I've ever seen. And certainly one of the most interesting racing games of the '80s.

Bureaucracy
Title Screen
Infocom 1987
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 5/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
Infocom's text adventures are known to be the best. Their game engine with its great parser was used for a large variety of masterpieces. Bureaucracy is one of those. What it makes superior to most of its "colleagues" is the hilarious plot. It was written by Steve Meretzky (Leather Goddesses of Phobos, Stationfall) and the well known author Douglas Adams. The two had collaborated before to convert Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to Galaxy into a game.

Colonial Conquest
Title Screen
SSI 1987
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 4/6
Language: English, Francais
Licence: Commercial
System: Atari ST
War without bloodshed? Easy, just don't show the individual's fate, but take it to a more abstract level. A way more abstract level: Push around wodden blocks on a world map, and suddenly, even genocide becomes fun! Like in Colonial Conquest.

Defender of the Crown
Title Screen
Cinemaware 1987
Genre: Strategy, Action
Rating: 4/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
Cinemaware was always known for producing very unique games, merging strategy, adventure and action. One of its first game, Defender of the Crown, has set this trend, which has proven to be the winning combination for years to come. The game was also the first designer work of Kellyn Beck, who while later designing such great games as S.D.I., Rocket Ranger and Centurion, will always be remembered for his best game, Defender of the Crown.

Dream Zone
Title Screen
Naughty Dog / Baudville 1987
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 4/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
I have played many weird games, but Dream Zone remains among the weirdest. What would you say if I told you that all bureaucrats are pigs? I mean real pigs. Or how about the fact that all you need to marry a woman is to wash your face? Or that your little brother's toy gun can kill nearly everything? You'd say that I should keep dreaming. Well, that's exactly what I did in this game.

Druid 2: Enlightenment
Title Screen
Firebird 1987
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: C64
103 peaceful years have passed since Acamantor and his Demon Princes have been banished from Belorn. Now the evil is back! And it's up to the last of the druids to stop it.

Other than last time, the evil magic has already spread across the outside world. So our hero doesn't just have to enter a fortress filled with monsters, but they are everywhere. Even in his own village, the dead are literally coming alive. Imagine how it'll look in the surrounding woods...

Goody
Title Screen
Opera Soft 1987
Genre: Action
Rating: 5/6
Language: Castellano
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
Goody is about a thief in search of a big bank to clean. An easy job if the streets, buildings, sewers and everything between his hideout and the place were not as filled with dangers.

Similar to another classic Opera's game this is mainly action oriented. It's a platformer where you must make good use of your weapon and legs to reach the end of the game.

Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
Title Screen
Infocom 1987
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 4/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
Finally. Finally I have the guts to put this up. My childhood love. My introduction to the Interactive Fiction world. Aah.
Based upon a world famous series of books by world renowned Science Fiction author Douglas Adams (who also wrote Starship Titanic, great game, it has the very best in sarcastic game humour you'll ever see), this game sets you as the loser Arthur Dent in one hell of a mess.
