Imperator
Title Screen
Thomas Wolf 1983
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 4/6
Language: German
Licence: Commercial
System: C64
Along with Kaiser, this game defined the 'ruler-genre' for years to come! The premise is simple: make your country strong and stable inwards to conquer your neighbours.

Fitting the name, Imperator is set in ancient Rome. Your main job is to distribute the budget amongst several groups of interest. Every year, they demand a certain sum and it's up to you whether to comply fully, partly or not at all. That influences this group's stance towards you. If you give your wife (!) only half the amount she wanted, she'll be more likely to start a rebellion. On the other hand, if you provide the merchants with even more money than they said, they'll love you!

Electronic Arts 1990
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 5/6
Language: English

System: PC
So, what makes this game so 'dry'? Well, just look at the screenshots. Apart from the 3D starmap everything is white and gray. Furthermore there´s no sound. 'Why play this game then?', some of you might say. WAIT! You´re about to miss a great game...As I said, it´s a very complex and deep game, but luckily I've managed to find the manual for detailed information.

Incubation
Title Screen
Blue Byte 1997
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 5/6
Language: Deutsch, English
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
1997? Yes, I know what you're thinking: So he is playing new games after all. That's right - there are a few good ones. The more current the year, the bigger the exception, though, making it even more noteworthy if a good game turns up in such a year. Considering its age, Incubation is like a flower growing from bowl of pus. Growing from such an unpleasant surrounding, it has to be spoiled in some way.

Lizard Breath, a small desert town in 1951. A meteor has just crashed down here. This is your chance to do some research! So you head over there and start working.

Suddenly, unusual things happen in and around the village. Animals are behaving strangely. On a nearby farm, a cow's head is bitten off and all the guts have disappeared. You examine some rock samples found near the crash site and discover one glowing piece of rock you've never seen before! Are there any links?

Jagged Alliance

Sir-Tech 1995
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 4.7/6
Language: English

Despot Lucas Santino has taken control over the tropical island of Metavira. Hire a team of mercenaries and get there by helicopter in order to reestablish the rightful circumstances.

At the beginning you have to recruit a powerful squad with limited financial means. For this purpose, there are the services of the „AIM“ agency that offers a quite broad variety of mercenaries with different abilities. The mercs' skills in various fields like marksmanship, agility and explosives are indicated by values between 0 and 100. There are cheap wimps and expensive, highly qualified experts.

King's Bounty
Title Screen
New World Computing 1990
Genre: Strategy, RPG
Rating: 5/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
Until this day, King's Bounty remains one of my favorite games. Offering rather limited gameplay but enormous replay value, the game has never left my hard drive, ever since I have gotten it in the 1980s. In King's Bounty, you play a hero with the task to find the stolen Scepter of Order. A band of criminals has hidden this item and divided the map pointing to its location among them. Only by defeating all the criminals, you will be able to piece together the map and find the scepter, hopefully before it is too late and the kingdom disintegrates.

Little Computer People
Title Screen
Activision 1985
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 5/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: C64
In the mid-90s, Tamagotchis - little annoying egg-shaped beeping virtual 'pets' - were really popular for some time. Later, there was the immensily successful (deserved!) PC game The Sims which gave the concept of the virtual 'goldfish tank' more complexity. But two decades before, this idea had already been put into a game! Little Computer People - the first scientifical simulation of life (not counting Alter Ego)!

Lords of the Realm (AGA)
Title Screen
Impressions 1995
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 5/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga
I have conquered medieval England countless times in countless variations (i.e. games) already. All the mixes have very similar flavours, the differences are marginal. In such a (once) overcrowded genre, these little things count though!

Lords of the Rising Sun
Title Screen
Cinemaware 1989
Genre: Strategy, Action
Rating: 4/6
Language: English
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga
You like the concept, but medieval England is getting a bit tiring? Then head over to medieval Japan! This is how Lords of the Rising Sun is best described. Oh, you don't have a clue what I'm talking about? Then you probably haven't played Defender of the Crown by the same company! Stop reading here and sit in the corner!

Machiavelli the Prince

You, being a rich venetian trader, do what you are better at, sending ships and caravans to commerce, buying at low prices for selling at higher ones wherever the best deals are and fight for the power against the other merchant families.
