Der dritte Teil von Westwoods beliebter Adventureserie setzt prinzipiell dort an, wo der erste Teil endete: Brandon hat den bösen Hofnarre Malcolm besiegt, und ihn in Stein verwandelt. Der Held wurde König, und alles war gut (na ja, abgesehen davon, dass König und Königin... tot sind). Nun befreit ein Blitz Malcolm aus seinem Gefängnis, und es ist an der Zeit "seine Seite der Geschichte zu hören", wie das Intro erzählt.

"There are cases when you design something that looks good on paper and there's only one small part of it that's fun. You have to focus on that and throw the rest away." Brent Iverson, the designer, chief programmer behind LHX and the author of these words did just that. He created a flight simulator that's pure joy to play: not too much of an arcade, which would disenchant less action-prone people, and not too much of a simulation, which would leave 95% of the gaming population frowning. LHX is simply the right blend of arcade, simulation and pure fun.

Links by Access Software was the turning point for PC golf games. Before Links (BL), golf games were more or less arcade simulations with blocky graphics, overly simplistic interface and so few options that after several days, you played just about everything there was. After Links (AL), golf games became the most realistic sports simulations around. Links introduced not only photoralistic graphics, but also a whole host of new options, very realistic physics, an unsurpassed interface and a franchise method that survives until today.

"Little Big Adventure" ist wohl das, was vielerorts mit dem universal verwendbaren Aufkleber "Action-Adventure" verkauft wird. Man nehme als erstes eine Geschichte, die sich durch das Spiel zieht, um den "Adventure"-Part abzudecken: Die Bewohner des fiktiven Planeten Twinsun leiden unter der Terrorherrschaft des Tyrannen FunFrock. In seiner Macht steht es, Klone zu erschaffen, die die Bevölkerung mit Big Brother-ähnlichen Methoden kontrollieren und unterdrücken. Ein Opfer dieses Regimes ist Twinsen, der einer magischen Sage des Planeten auf der Spur ist, um damit FunFrock zu besiegen und die unterjochten Bewohner zu befreien. Diese Rebellenrolle fällt dem Spieler zu, der somit seinen Putschphantasien freien Lauf lassen kann. Zur Vervollständigung des Dilemmas wird auch noch Twinsens Frau entführt, was zusätzlich persönliche Rachegelüste schürt und emotionale Beschützerinstikte aktiviert.

In "M1 Tank Platoon" leitet man einen Zug mit vier mächtigen M1 Abrams Kampfpanzern durch diverse Missionen. Deren Ziele reichen von Verteidigungseinsätzen über Kontakt mit dem Feind bis hin zu Angriffsmissionen. Man kämpft dabei immer gegen die Rote Armee, die in Westeuropa eingefallen ist.

Dies ist eines der wenigen deutschen Spiele, das eine Menge internationale Anerkennung erhielt. Und diese auch wirklich verdiente. Erstmal passt es in ein typisch deutsches Klischee: eine Wirtschaftssimulation. Aber im Gegensatz zu so lächerlichen Versuchen wie Winzer macht diese hier wirklich Spaß! Die Gründe dafür sind relativ offensichtlich.

Mah Jongg is one of those little gems you just HAVE to have on your harddisk - for the simple reason that it's small, runs under Windows without the slightest problems (at least not under those Windows versions I played it under - which are Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows XP) and is exactly the game you are looking for when you want to play but don't have an idea what to play. It's always good for a round or two... or even for a playing it all night (if you are like my mother - and she's hardly a gamer, far away from that actually!).

One day, in the middle of 2000, I bought several magazines with demo cds on a computer fair. On one of those cds, I found the demo for "Majesty: the fantasy kingdom sim" and, mildly interested, decided to give it a try. The second I started playing the demo I was hooked, and the game hasn't left my harddrive since.
