Review by Mr Creosote (published 2002-08-05, last updated 2006-09-15):
P.O.D. - Proof Of Destruction. A game in which you're indestructable? Great idea, will take advantage of that immediately! Nah, nah, you can't hurt me, evil monsters! Oops? What was that 'boom' sound? Aw, crap - look for yourself what happened :( Mr Creosote's POD exploding This is a fraud! It clearly said 'Proof Of Destruction' on the box. I demand my money back!

This is how it all began: Thought I'd get a shooter which wouldn't be too hard for me like all the others. Went to the shop, scanned the boxes in the C16 shelf. And what did my eye catch? A cool futuristic comic-like metallic blob standing on a kind of grid aiming its gun at evil virus-like creatures - with a cool smile on its lips. The title: 'Proof Of Destruction'. Great! At last my search has come to an end! At last I will be able to show off with great highscores!

Went home, put the tape into the drive (less violence than normal was needed, promising sign), read the instructions how to load the game. Typed in the cryptic command, a quick look back to the instructions.... what does it say there? Press ENTER? Uh... what kind of key is that? I searched the whole keyboard, searched it again, searched it again. And what did I find? Nothing! No ENTER key! Another check - yes, it says 'For C16/Plus4' on the box and my computer is... a Plus/4. Why doesn't this damn game work? I hate this! It's driving me mad! Oooooooh.... argh...... grmbl.....

.......(skipping the next ten hours of pure frustration).......

Ok, meanwhile, I've found out I can press RETURN instead of ENTER and the game started. And sometimes, it even lets me write one line of text by choosing letters with my joystick! Great feature! Can't figure out when that feature kicks in though. But that mystery can be solved later with more research, the shooting rules! Many different enemies, all easily recognizable (great graphics!), quick levels, clear structure, the idea of the grid which slowly regenerates itself after it's been damaged is fun! This game is really way better than all other shooters I've played - even on the oh-so-superior C64!

But then - the revelation of the beginning! You can die! But now I've uncovered this fraud and published it here on the Internet, so that everybody can see and read it - everybody will be warned. In the end, I triumphed!

Wait...... isn't the title of the game somehow....... ambigous? 'proof of' could mean 'safe from'........ but......... there's a second point in my dictionary.......... 'evidence'? Argh! They tricked me into providing proof of my own desctruction publically here........... and............ won - I'll have to live with this shame now :(
