Okay, do you think we can agree on "rock", being the most general definition of hand-made music there is?

Reggae title from their first studio album (The Clash): Police and Thieves (great song btw ).

It's nearly impossible to categorize The Clash's later developement (starting with London Calling). It is just that they didn't follow any of the 'established' styles, but mixed them in ways which had never been done before. That is why I called them 'one of the most influential bands' - some people even say they redefined Rock music completely, but I wouldn't go as far as that.
So to get back to the question: I don't know a word for the music they made mainly from 1979 on because it spans several dozens of different styles!

Well, you might know their songs better than me, but the last time I listened to The Clash on some party, I was rather surprised how many of their songs actually are in reggae style (of course not Bob Marley-like reaggae, but concerning the rythm). In contrast to that, I don't remember such a song off their mid-seventies albums.
If you had to describe their development as a style of music, what would you choose? They started with punk, but how'd you call their style from late Seventies on?

Hmm... they have about 5-10 Reggae titles on the whole, half of them are from the 70s. Claiming they 'turned into a Reggae band' is a bit off...

Hardly true. Dead Can Dance is from the early 80s, The Clash's masterpieces are from the late 70s. Combat Rock is from that time, yes, but I never claimed you should have known it in the time it was first released
