Yeah, stretching the forum was the main reason I brought it up. Of course, it's impossible to make certain it won't stretch, since it also depends on how people have their fonts set on their computers an in their browsers.

I think I've done it. I put in 50 characters as maximum length, because when I set my browser to 640 pixels width, between 55 and 60 characters can be displayed in the forum without enlarging the post table. A few less to be safe.

Defining one defines the other.
50 or 60 characters seems like a good number (the google search link I posted in the other thread was 46 chars, several others on the forum are around 57 chars). When viewed in the context of the forum, these are about the longest links that look "right" ("right" being highly subjective of course ).

What about applying the same idea to URLs in the forum? Could the same code be used to cutoff the display of long URLs at a given point without also truncating the actual link?

Good idea It's actually just one additional line of code, so I quickly did it.

The best solution would be to cutoff title displays on the main page after a certain number of characters, rendering a title such as "glitches on operation stealth - need help - i love this game too much " into something like "glitches on operation stealth...". I don't know how hard that'd be to actually achieve though.

Hmm, well, it's behaving as expected. The text has to go somewhere and line breaks in the right column aren't allowed, because they're screw up the indented text. All this would be easy to solve, but not with this kind of HTML code this forum version uses.

When the most recent thread in one of the forums has a long title, it screws up the layout of the main page.
