![]() Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11624 | As discussed in the other thread, we're going to classify games by 'theme' now. The site's backend can already handle this, although you won't be able to use it yet - for the simple reason that activating the function publically doesn't make sense as long as the data basis feeding it isn't there. So we have to take care of that being there first. Wandrell and I will do all the games which we have added ourselves. That, however, leaves us with approximately 200 more games which have been added by people who aren't exactly active anymore. So we need help to classify those. Your help. Not because we're lazy, but because we already have more than enough to handle (do the math: I'm talking about 200 games which weren't added by either Wandrell or me - leaving about 400 which were and which we'll do anyway). You can find a list of the themes in my post in this thread: http://www.goodolddays.net/forum/topic.php?id=2224. A list of 'uncovered' games is available here: http://www.goodolddays.net/0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_0_en_0_0_missing_1__0_0_0/. You'll find that the latter page also has a list of games without comparisons. That list is vastly identical. If you go through the list to name themes, it would be great if you could also come up with comparisons for that game (at least one, not more than four) - to get rid off all those 'dead end' game entries once and for all. Once you start thinking about applying theme information, you're already halfway there anyway, so it really makes sense to do this in one combined step. If you come up with comparisons, try not to make them completely circular. I.e. if you write up comparisons for games A and B, don't just compare A to B and B to A. Then, the visitors will be stuck in an infinite loop. It is, of course, ok to to 'inverse' comparisons, but only if you also include at least one more game as an 'escape'. I.e.: Compare A to B and to C, and compare B to A and to D. If there absolutely is no other game on the site which a game can be compared to, you can also provide 'forward comparisons', i.e. comparisons with games which aren't on the site (yet). Obviously, it would be great if such games were actually to get to the site in the near future... Last, but not least, there is also a list of the games whose reviews haven't yet been translated into German. This is yet another reminder that we really need to take care of that problem as well. Details about that can be found here: http://www.goodolddays.net/forum/topic.php?id=940. Of course, your help won't be in vain. As with all contributions, your site contribution score will go up with every bit you do. One point for each game classified with themes, one point for each comparison you come up with (1.5 points if you submit those comparisons in both languages of the site). And, of course, the usual five points for each review translation. Seriously, this is an easy way to breach the magical wall of 100 points in order never to have to bother with the unreliable and slow 'alternate download server' again! And if you're not bothered with this score - why not just help the site? So here's the deal: Just answer to this thread and list your contributions in a understandable way. Example: Advanced Destroyer Simulator Themes: Historcial, Nautical, War Comparison: Silent Service 2 (Amiga) Submarine warfare in the pacific + Elements of sneaky attacks and hit & run tactics - No pre-made missions = Similar looks and functions, yet superior due to tense battle scenes I'll put everything into the database then which will trigger the entry to disappear from the 'missing' list automatically. ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! ----- Edited by Mr Creosote at 10:01 on March 19th, 2009 |

![]() Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11624 | I'll note games which I couldn't classify so far in this thread as well. Feel free to point out other problematic cases, too. Maybe then we'll see a pattern so that we can add another theme or so.
