![]() Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11583 | http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geocities/geocities-05.html The few pieces of media commenting on it at all are basically all having a laugh at how Geocities was just an anachronism and a home for 'private websites' made of animated GIFs, ugly background pictures and no contents. Spot-on. However, if offering such services is an anachronism, why does Myspace exist? Or any of those 'social networks'? The crowd might have moved on from Geocities to new places, but is there really a difference? 'Web 2.0', right - all been there since the beginning of the Internet. Ironic how Myspace will get the same taunting that Geocities does in ten years time - and nobody will even remember how 'great' it used to be. Just like Geocities was once very popular... ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |

Member Retired Gumby Posts: 1092 | With this we will lose some old pages. I've found more than once geocities webpages with old games and documents forgotten everywhere. And it's sad how a personal website is anachronic, now the fashion are massive generic pages. Everybody has it's own blog, everybody uses facebook, etc. And even when pages tailored to a kind of people, pages made based on interests instead of a generic scope, have and will always be popular. But in time, I hope, we will see all this happen again. People working on their pages, instead of saying "but there are blogs, why do you want to code anything?". |

![]() Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11583 | Actually, you're right, there is a difference between Geocities and today's aequivalents: Although back then, people trusted a company with the hosting of their stuff, things have even gone worse since then. Now, it's not just the hosting, but the whole framework they hand over to big evil companies. And (at least in the anglo-american part of the world) their contents, too. Ironic as it sounds: Compared to what's out there today, Geocities represented freedom of speech and expression. Today, all you're 'allowed' to do is work for free so that some company can make profits. As for Facebook and those, putting the obvious privacy concerns aside, that's even another step back to the dark ages when 'online services' like AOL and Compuserve were popular. Each had its own net and you couldn't communicate with anyone in another net. Just like today, you can't contact someone from your Facebook account who is on another one of these 'networks'. Yet, that's what most people seem to use for communication nowadays. Plain e-mail would be way superior... ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |

![]() Member Retired Gumby Posts: 743 | Well that just pisses me off. My geocities site was one of the first things I ever had online, and I still use it occaisionally. Yahoo is just being cheapass fucktards, and are merely doing this in order to try to get people to buy their paid hosting. Do they really think that anyone who's been using their free hosting will suddenly agree to give them their money?? Hell no, they'll just go to some other free host. ----- At the end of the day, you're left with a bent fork & a pissed off rhino. |

![]() Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11583 | Is there such a thing as a 'free host' left? It seems all everybody uses these days is... 1. 'Blogs' for inane writing 2. 'Free file hosts' for storing illegal copies The first being restricted to text nobody will ever read and the second not allowing for any actual site to be created. I don't think Yahoo actually believes they'll sell any hosting through this. Let's not forget that they're pretty much broke anyway. They've been a candidate to be bought by Google and Microsoft a few times already - just that Yahoo's value was apparantely too low even for that. Presumably, they just want to get rid off this dead branch which doesn't offer the slightest bit of earning potential. Who can blame them really? ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |

![]() Member Master Gumby Posts: 82 | Something related. I know a few people , including myself, that have had their yahoo accounts randomly deleted for no reason. It's been happening for years, and it's very common. From doing some research on this years ago, I noticed there were many webmasters dissatisfied with their paid yahoo hosting. As far as I can tell, Yahoo is pure evil. ----- ISO Art - Lost in Cyberspace |

Member Retired Gumby Posts: 1092 | I don't love Yahoo. Why should I? I'm just using their webmail since ever, and it is the mail I've given always to everybody, not needing to worry if I change to another or not. When I created it there was no google or anywhere to create a good webmail, and I didn't like using the mail the internet company gave me, as it would exist only as long as I were their client. |

![]() Member Retired Gumby Posts: 743 | Yahoo was probably my 2nd or 3rd email acct ever (not counting the ISP one, which I never did use). My first ever acct was with a long-gone site called cheqmail, which had shitloads of domains to choose from. I also had a hotmail acct when back when, but I'm not sure if that was just before or just after yahoo. I also had a lycos & an excite acct back then (my lycos acct is still fully functional, not sure about my excite one), and several fly-by-night email companies. I still use my yahoo email acct as a reserve one, but don't use it very often. Likewise I still use yahoo's tv listings as a backup for when zap2it is down, but not very often. The only other thing I use yahoo for is local movie listings, as I find it to be more complete & accurate than any other sources I've found. ----- At the end of the day, you're left with a bent fork & a pissed off rhino. |

![]() Member Retired Gumby Posts: 743 | Personally, safety/security of email means very little to me. Almost the only thing I use email for is signing up for websites, the most any hacker would get out of the attempt is a forum password or two. ----- At the end of the day, you're left with a bent fork & a pissed off rhino. |
