I'm sure NetDanzr knows this. But can you run Civ 1 w/ 98 or XP? I was thinking about playing it again. I'm running both.

Any tips you use to run it, etc., would be helpful.

Yuo can run almost any DOS game with w98, especialy if you have a sound card that suports DOS in w98 ( those were the times of the old .vxd drivers) . My awe64 does.
I also keep windoze2000, for some other reasons than games

Well, I was figuring there was more to this, and there is. I don't think my sound card supports DOS applications.
It runs ok but without sound.

Well, guess I'm screwed, huh?

Well, it depends. Did you actually try all sound settings? If yes, you should check to what DMA, IRQ and Port your sound card is set to. If it's anything different than 1, 5 (or 7) and 220, it can't work - change the settings of the card to these then. And if it doesn't work at all: I can assure you the sound isn't all that great in Civilization :P

Yeah, I tried some of the settings. The MIDI board works, but that's just music of course. I'd rather have SB/Adlib support. My sound card settings are IRQ 5, 220, DMA 1. I didn't notice any way to change the settings within Civ for those.

I hear you can use IBM sounds only and it works ok under windows, but I'm not a fan of beautiful bleeps and blops.

There isn't a big difference between the sound through Adlib and PC speaker in Civilization. Sound effects don't exist in a mentionable number anyway, and the music (which only plays during diplomatic meetings) is very similar.

You could always try running it with VDMS... I have an IRQ of 10 and a DMA of 0 I think under winxp so practicly no old game will run under it but with vdms I've had very few problems regarding my sound...

Win98 was always very weird for me. Sometimes I would have to choose the Soundblaster option with whatever settings, and sometimes I would have to choose "Microsoft Sound Card" with a port of 388. Very strange.

Mr Creosote, there is a significant difference in my opinion on the sound between SB/Adlib and PC speaker.

I was thinking about VDMS actually.

I suppose I could just play Civ2 instead, but the graphics in Civ1 appeal to me more in someways - more charming I guess.

How come? I've never had any problems with it and am quite pleased with it as a result...

I played Civilization with the PC Speaker for years, and I find it more than adequate unless you have a very cheap speaker...

I dont have any trouble playing Civ 1 on XP Pro. I never had problems on 98 either.

If you can get it working without sound then take that as a blessing in disguise. I would. It annoys me having to make the effort to change the volume on my speakers every time I play that game.

Hey A E I, youve stolen my avatar! ;)

I've played Master of Orion and Master of Magic quite a bit with sound blaster support (on my old computer) and I'm not about to regress to PC speaker to play Civ1. I think I'm talking to the wrong people about this because it's no big
deal to most of you. You're wrong about the difference, I've loaded it up before. Maybe you're deaf. But thanks for the suggestions or lack thereof.

I don't think VDMsound supports Civ1 but I could be wrong.

Ahem! There are 11 answers in this topic by other members than yourself. They contain many different suggestions how to fix that problem. Maybe you're just blind. Thanks for your niceness, or the lack thereof.

That's because you don't own a sound card, and probably never have.

Yeah, but if I was a patient, you would have failed as a doctor because you aren't hearing (get it?) what it is I'm looking for.

p.s. 11?

I own a Soundblaster AWE 64 ISA and all my games work with it. Simple as that. Now maybe you can enlighten me what the sound in MOO and MOM has to do with the sound in Civ?

If you can't manage to get something to work with which nobody else has a problem, you might consider another source of the error: one between the keyboard and the chair. Since you're apparantely just some impatient and arrogant teenager, I'll stop replying to anything you post. That includes this thread, for which I'd have a foolproof solution. Too bad for you. Maybe someday you'll learn insulting people who are trying to help you isn't the most genious thing.
