I had a roku box for a while but it was a piece of shit, weak wifi, slow as hell (most likely due to low ram), and extremely walled garden. Then someone at work told me about android boxes & kodi so I gave that a try, it kicks roku's ass 10,000%. I've been using it for a few years now, though these days I use other streaming apps more than the kodi one I originally got it for.

I've just hooked a regular Linux with Kodi hooked up to my TV. It feeds off a huge hard drive located in another room. No need for Google spyware, "streaming apps" etc.
