Adobe, pissed that Microsoft are going to include their own version of the PDF format in the next installment of Windows - Longhorn - have decided to start acting like them in the hope it brings them kudos -

I'm not quite sure what to make of this. Should we be bothered?

From what I've read, it's not only Adobe, but also JASC with their Paint Shop Pro who are doing this. Seems to me like some silly legal mumbo jumbo - a step to avoid being sued by governments and banks who have no clue about computers.

I didnt know JASC were onto it as well! I dont use Linux on the destop so ive no idea if the Gimp will start behaving like this, doubtfull i suppose. Jeez, I hope this doesnt mean I feel the need to migrate to Linux at the desktop level :( I cant face that. Coping with debian is bad enough ;).

It makes me wonder what will happen when I go to the photocopier at work on Monday morning :)

Neither stable version 1.2, nor beta 1.3, nor the beta of 2.0 which was released two days ago show any behaviour like that.

If you were able to stand 'being used' by Windows XP so far, it shouldn't be all too traumatic :P Then again, The Gimp is available for Windows as well...

And remind me again, why would I need to upgrade from my older Photoshop to the newest one?

Probably because you accepted some license saying you have to upgrade when a new version comes out. Quite common these days :P

Actually, my ancient version of Photoshop didn't say that :P

However, the license agreement in general is the primary reason why I didn't upgrade to a newer version for quite some time, and why I'm switching to Gimp when I really feel like I need the new version. The secondary reason is that I refuse to have my home computer connected to the Internet (among other things, so that companies can't check my compliance with the EULAs), and so I wouldn't be able to activate the new software.

Is this real? Are there any example images that PS is guaranteed to reject? I just loaded a scan of a $ banknote with no problems.

Supposedly, it only affects the new banknotes. There are also a lot of color printers and copiers that would refuse to print them.

Basically, it spots a pattern of 5 circles in the money and that clues it in. I know the US 20 bills have little 20s floating around the backside, and the zeros make up this patter. I've seen some where they are used as musical notes in a staff.
