Member Prof Gumby Posts: 560 | Here in Belgium the legal limit on alcohol is .05% but sadly most people ignore it completly... Not that I mind seeing as I know people who can drive perfectly safe after a beer or 5 (spread over the evening)... But then again I know people who can't drive even when they're sober so I guess that evens it out... As long as people would be responsible and know their limits it wouldn't be a problem but I geuss that would be to much to ask from a mere mortal... *sigh* Speed limit is 30 kmh in town- and citycenters, 70 on secondary roads, 90 on primary roads and 120 on the highway but most people drive 140 or something on the highway... the other ones depend on the road itself of course... In Belgium we have an exuberant amount of rules but hardly any are upheld... except those involving killing and such of course ----- "In theory, if people bred as fast as ants, and with an equal indifference for it's surrounding species, earth would have 5 million human inhabitants at the turn of the century. But this, of course, is highly unthinkable" |

I've seen people drive perfectly after 20 beers or even more... Escaping the alcohol tests is just a game of chance really, everyone does some drunk driving sometimes... I mean, after two beers you're already over the limit (0.05% as Pada1 said)... Who can honestly say they even feel that they've had a beer after just two? About speed limits: no-one ever respects them, getting a ticket is considered 'bad luck'... I'd rather call it a 'tax' you can choose to pay (the managers with their big BMW 7 series get to drive as fast as they want, 'cause they can afford it)... I think highways here should be more 'German-style' (If I'm not mistaken you can drive as fast as you want there on certain designated hours, mainly by night)... Luckily, I haven't gotten my license yet ----- "One Very Important Thought" |

I'm sure I would feel it - it's a matter of what you're used to.Quote: I think highways here should be more 'German-style' (If I'm not mistaken you can drive as fast as you want there on certain designated hours, mainly by night)... Here, you can drive as fast as you want on 'highways' at any time as a general rule. There are exceptions on certain routes, but those are usually not based on the time of the day, but on the state the road is in and such.----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |

Member Retired Gumby Posts: 1007 | Quote: Escaping the alcohol tests is just a game of chance really, everyone does some drunk driving sometimes... Not true. I used to drink heavily, and even now I have a beer nearly every day. Yet, I have never driven, even after a single beer. Quote: I mean, after two beers you're already over the limit (0.05% as Pada1 said)... Who can honestly say they even feel that they've had a beer after just two? As I said, I drank a lot, so I should be used to it. I feel quite intoxicated after a single beer. Quote: About speed limits: no-one ever respects them, getting a ticket is considered 'bad luck'... That's true, partially though. In the US, people almost religiously observe speed limits in residential areas; they know that those speed limits are there to protect the people who live in those areas, not the drivers. On the highways, everybody moves along with the traffic. Sometimes it's below the speed limit, sometimes above, but there's no driving fast for the sake of going over the speed limit. In such a case, however, getting a ticket really is pure bad luck. Well, not exactly - I found that cops tend to ignore gray, 14-years old Volvos and concentrate on new, bright red sports cars instead ----- NetDanzr<br /> -The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog- |

Member Prof Gumby Posts: 607 | Ok, maybe I shouldn't have emphasized the "everyone" so much... But still I'm talking about a vast majority of (belgian) people... As for 'feeling quite intoxicated' after one beer: that must be some mean beer you're drinking... And by 'getting a ticket is considered bad luck' I mean no-one is ever going to say it's their own fault, if you get a speeding ticket you'll say: "Damn cops..." and not "Damn, I drove too fast..." Why? Because 'everybody does it' of course... So maybe I over-generalized just a bit, but we do have a serious mentality problem here in Belgium... ----- "One Very Important Thought" |
