![]() Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11573 | My favourite line is the last one: "Symantec Antivirus Research reported that virus sightings were down by 95% this morning." It just hits the nail on the head ![]() ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |

![]() Member Prof Gumby Posts: 488 | The only reason why Windows is the most targeted OS is because it's the most widely used. If Linux was the most widely used OS in the world instead then viruses for it would be abundant and common. ----- I am on a hot streak… Litterally. |

![]() Member Retired Gumby Posts: 936 | but you just cannot ignore that if you plug a fresh windows machine into ethernet or something, it gets infected with a ton of stuff right away. Here at school they give away discs so you can patch your machine with a bunch of things before you plug in. Of course, not a lot of people do this, and terrible things end up happening. ----- Keep your stick on the ice |

![]() Member Prof Gumby Posts: 488 | Well, I know for sure that my WinXP version came patched with Service Pack 1 built in. I'd expect new computers nowaday to come patched with Service Pack 2 built in... That should take care of several issues... But I agree that any computer is extremely vulnerable without a firewall and an antivirus, and anti-spyware softwares are a must... If not essential. ----- I am on a hot streak… Litterally. |

![]() Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11573 | On the technical side, there is one major difference between Microsoft Windows and any other operating system which is relevant for security: Internet Explorer. Even the existence of a program which can be used both as a webbrowser and as a tool to update crucial system files is just the worst security nightmare ever designed! Nothing even roughly aequivalent exists on any other system I know. And if you seriously think 'Service Pack xyz' is going to save you from the gaping security holes which they still leave open, that's just naive. New remote vulnerabilities are discovered every day, and it usually takes Microsoft several months to provide a patch (if they release one at all). On the user side, there is one major flaw in 'Windows architecture', too: 99% of all computers running with root privileges all the time. Every single process can take the whole system down. Yet more proof that one of the main problems sits between chair and keyboard... ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |
