Too much focus on console games for my taste, but it could be worse...

It could also be better. I'm missing almost 70% of my favourite games on the list.

If it ain't broken, you're not trying hard enough.

Oh, I certainly didn't mean that good. 'My' percentage is even worse. However, taking into account how those lists usually look these days (99% new games)... I've seen way worse!

It's pretty shoddy though. Some of the game descriptions are errant too, usually when they say 'This game is the first to do THIS', I can think out of memory a game I've played before that one that had that feature.

Super Mario Brothers is number one? I don't see how a clone game can be even in a top one hundred let alone number one. Especially since you can beat the stupid game in 15 minutes.

This list is just titled 'Top 100 Games'. From the introduction:
Quote:
Like last time, our criteria for this uber-list of games consisted of a variety of factors, including how good the game was compared to others at the time, the overall game design, how well it stood up over the long-haul, how influential it was in the realm of gaming and just plain how much fun we had playing the damn things.
So, it does measure how influential games were, after all. Just from the title, I gathered it would just be a list of 'best games' which are 'most fun'. In that light, sequels and clones are of course questionable, but at least they're not totally misplaced (like on that list we discussed so much called 'most influential games of all time'), because it's just one criteria of many.

As for the descriptions... I have to admit I only skimmed over few of them before, but now that you say it: Ultima Underworld is described as 'the first game to introduce full-range movement in a first-person perspective' - Castle Master came out a year earlier. They're saying Doom was released as Freeware - total bullshit, it's Shareware. Just examples. On the other hand, they do admit that this horrible 'Herzog Zwei' game did not single-handedly invent real time strategy which is very refreshing. A mixed bag.

Super Mario Bros being #1: I think this game sucks badly, but I was positively surprised that all top 10 games were from the last millenium, and 6 of them even older than 10 years. They even chose Pirates! as #6 (though miscredited as 'PC' rather than 'C64'), and not that horrible recent remake. Sure, any of the spots is highly disputable, but at least it shows some maturity not to fill up the top spots with games currently in the sales charts to push them even further.

Of which is a clone Super Mario Bros? I barely know games from before the NES.

As for those top games, I find those things silly always, its too hard already choose oneself favorite game, and they are attempting to select the best ones of all the games that exist. And they rarely say that one of my favourite games is good, at least in that list one of them is in the first ten, Super Metroid.

Jungle Hunt is older, though.
