Showing off how far graphics had advanced in just four short years, this obscure Wing Commander remake completely redoes all visuals and also adds speech for all the original dialogue. The former gives a good impression in space. Dialogue cutscenes, on the other hand, are questionable at best. The character faces look stiff, background extras are heavily re-used and a number of voice actors give only a semi-professional impression. We have to remind ourselves that the same year, Wing Commander III was also released on PC (and 3DO), sporting probably the most extensive use of live action cutscenes ever encountered in a video game. Something Super Wing Commander can't compare to.

The biggest gripe with this version, however, is its controls. It shows that the game was made for a computer with a full keyboard. On the gamepad, many functions can only be triggered by combining keypresses, which in the heat of the action can easily go wrong. Which is not the only reason why this version is noticeably harder.

Nevertheless, there is a very good reason for fans to give it a try: it contains some exclusive missions set between the two "Secret Missions" expansion packs.
