So, how does a game end up with a '1' in its title anyway? Zork began its life as a much larger game on Mainframe computers. After it was decided to exploit its potential commercially, regular home computers became the limiting target. So Zork was split into three parts - this one being the first.

When porting the original mainframe Zork adventure game, programmed on the PDP-10 at MIT, to the home computer market, the programmers at Infocom had to split it into three parts to make it small enough to fit on 5¼” floppy diskettes. “Zork III: The Dungeon Master”, released in 1982, is the final section of that original adventure. It’s mind-bending puzzles, mazes, and engrossing storyline have delighted and frustrated gamers for over 35 years.

I have decided to return to the temple of Aggripa. It has been far too long since my last visit, must be almost over five years by now since the last time I retraced Nemesis’ steps. As always I read Bivotar’s journal while I was waiting for the temple doors to open. This booklet seems like an ancient relic in itself, for long gone are the days when every game told a good part of its story with actual items you could touch and feel. And maybe that’s exactly why it did not fail to set me in the proper mood for the journey ahead.

Some jealous fiend has seized a beautiful maiden which you have only just begun to admire and dragged her down to the castle for immediate incarceration (sounds like another date went terribly wrong). You pursued them, but just before you know it the drawbridge was raised thus preventing you from going any further. Splendid. It looks like you will have to find another way to sneak into the castle and save your now-sweetheart which may take a few puzzles to solve.
