Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold

Apogee 1993
Genre: Action
Rating: 4.5/6
Licence: Shareware
System: PC

You are a space super-agent. And how do these people expend their time? Saving the world, of course! So here you are on your way to get rid of Dr Goldfire, the menacing evil guy, and his evil army of mutants and aliens.

Blaster Master

SunSoft 1988
Genre: Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: NES

So you have a car that can shoot, jump and get upgrades to open new ways. Sounds great. And the map is big and branching? It starts to look familiar. Now you'll tell me... What? But it's linear and repetitive? Well, what a shame.

Image Works 1989
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

Blasteroids, along with Phobia and Spidertronic, was one of the first three original games I owned. Ironically enough, I owned it before I even got an Amiga. Oh well – looking at a box cover can be fun, too.

Graffiti 1995
Genre: Sport, Simulation
Rating: -
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
German version of "Screamer" with just marginal differences: different title, translated menus, slightly different banners.

Bleifuss Fun

UDS / Virgin Interactive 1997
Genre: Action, Sport
Rating: -
Licence: Commercial
System: PC
In Germany, Ignition was called Bleifuss Fun, linking it to the successful Bleifuss (Screamer) games. Apart from the title and the in-game language, there are no differences.

Andrew Metzger 2011
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Interpreter

A woman is abducted right off the street by a man. When she wakes up, she finds herself chained to a bed... obviously, the goal is to escape. The catch: She is blind and, being in an unknown surrounding and still affected by the shock of the attack, disoriented. "Who says blindness is a handicap?", asks the game. This seems like a bit of an unreasonable implication – it is a handicap and this game will not convince anyone otherwise. A better tag line would have been "Who says being blind makes you easy prey?" or "Who says blindness makes you defenseless?", because that is what the game turns out to be actually about: fighting back.

Cameron Wilkin 1999
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

"Ignorance is bliss", people say. Know those clichéd fantasy settings in which a knight in shining armour slashes his way through hordes of 'monsters', although the whole time, you have this nagging question in the back of your head how this guy is exactly 'good' and how his victims are 'evil'? Then Bliss might be for you. On the surface, the game is exactly what we all despise: Your alter ego, the hero, has been captured by the Orcish army of an evil magician. Now, he has to escape from the dungeon and finally kill the evil guy's dragon. The whole journey being a violent killing spree. However, the evil wizard has apparantely put a curse on your head as sometimes, reality just seems to fade away...

Blobby Volley

D. Skoraszewski 2001
Genre: Sport, Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

Blobby Volley is another little but neat freeware game. As the name states it's kind of a volleyball game and somewhat resembles a beach volleyball variant. But here it's only one on one.

P.Z.K. Co. Development Group 1989
Genre: Puzzle
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

On the one side of the ring you see the longtime fan of Tetris - on the other side you see the game claiming to be the next step in the evolution of Tetris. So... there you have me, the fan, and Blockout, the 3D-variant of Tetris. I won't go into the concept of Tetris now, just in case you have never heard of it, go to the review of Tetris and read up on it. While you're there you should also consider trying that one out first. If you like it, there's a chance you will like Blockout too, if you don't like it - well... it's pretty much guaranteed that you won't like Blockout either. This brings us back to the idea of the ring with the game on one side and me on the other. Playing this game means constant fighting - and that is with the controls of it. But I will get into that later on.

Philip Winterberg 2001
Genre: Puzzle
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

Blödtris - or Dumbtris as it's called if you install it in english version (the game can be installed in english or german) - is a game that can be sorted into the Tetris-category. Well... at least the name of it claims that sort of kinship. Now it's a bit difficult to write a proper review about it I have to admit. First of all - this game is not really... well... serious. The goal of it is the same as you have in Tetris - you have to build whole lines, they vanish, you get points and after a certain amount of points you go up one level, which means things go faster and so on and so forth.
