Chicken Invaders

chickeninvaders01.png
InterAction Software 1999
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

There's only so much you can say about Space Invaders. Pretty much everything of that must have been said... a zillion times. This review won't be able to say anything new about the concept as such. This game - you expected it - is a Space Invaders clone. Not more, not less. It adds some standards to the general concept that all have been seen before in one or the other way. The idea behind it is shooting up the invaders or avoid getting hit from asteroids. That's pretty much it - there's some differences between the movements of the invaders and there's different asteroid levels - ah and... there's also a boss invader (which you won't see on the screenshots to leave at least a little surprise). So... that's it, case closed?

Christoph Kolumbus

go_000.png
Software 2000 1994
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC, Amiga (OCS/ECS)

The strategic business simulation Christoph Kolumbus was published in February 1994 by "Software 2000" on the PC and the Amiga. On the Internet, the game is sometimes called a clone of The Patrician, because it was designed by Martin Wölk who was also involved in said other game. I see more parallels with the Amiga/C64 game Spoils of War from the year 1992, though, because the game is about discovering surrounding islands from one's home base, settle and develop them, but selling goods and building new ships or military units is only possible in the home base. A free form of trade like in The Patrician where you can buy and sell goods whereever you want is not possible, you can only trade at your home harbour.

Citadel

Citadel01.png
Virtual Design / Black Legend 1995
Genre: Action
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga
Part of the first wave of 3D shooters on the Amiga, Citadel came from the same publisher as Behind the Iron Gate, which raised some eyebrows concerning the fairly big difference between the two. Indeed, the games came from different teams and were developed in parallel. So in case you've played the other game, don't worry – the same weaknesses aren't applicable to this one at all.

Civilization

civ01.png
Microprose 1991
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 6/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Without any doubt, Civilization is the greatest and most addictive game that ever graced a computer screen. Designed by Sid Meier, who at that time was already a household name among gamers, the game introduced the world to a new level of empire management: from settling whole continents, through researching new technologies, to building military units, city improvements and even wonders of the world. The game has spawned several sequels and copies, out of which only a single one (Alpha Centauri) comes close in the terms of gameplay and overall fun. Civilization has never left my hard drive, and probably never will, remaining the main reason why I still keep MS-DOS on a separate partition.

Civilization for Windows

Microprose 1991
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 6/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

"Civilization" is definitely one of Sid Meier's masterpieces and surely one of the most famous games of all times. The game is far too complex to be reviewed in its entirety. For further explanations look into the very extensive help files and the Civilopedia which come with the game.

Civilization V

2K Games 2010
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

One of the most successful classics goes into its fifth incarnation. Sid Meier’s Civilization has not been matched yet… although there has only been one serious contender so far a couple of years ago – Call to Power. Will this unrivalled game in its fifth incarnation still be able to surprise us above new graphics?

Claas APS-Spiel

claas1_001.png
? 1995
Genre: Action
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

This game will probably be fairly unknown. It is a game which could be downloaded from the website of the manufacturer of agricultural machinery Claas a few years ago.

If you always wanted to drive a harvester, this game will be just right for you. That is because it is the game's sole purpose to drive around a field and harvest as much crop as possible. In that process, you have to avoid different obstacles and take care not to run over small hares or deer with your blades. Otherwise, the game will be over and if you have collected a sufficient amount of points, you can enter your name into the high score list.
