Pizza Connection

Software 2000 1994
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Ah, Pizza Connection! A gem from the German biz sim wave of the early 90s which, above everything, impresses with its immensely varied (legal and illegal) possible activities.

Pizza Tycoon

Software 2000 1994
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Pizza Tycoon is not only the original tycoon game that started a whole niche, but also one of the best ones. It had all: a relatively simple concept, a mix of several gaming styles, money and property management and cartoonish graphics. Add to it tacky music, several amusing sub-games and several ways to make money, and you have something that should be hardly bearable to a hardcore gamer. However, include a very deep business strategy, mix it all together, and suddenly you have a very decent game that everybody would like.

Plan 9 from Outer Space

Gremlin 1992
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

It is generally accepted as the 'worst movie ever'. It has everything what makes a film funny: acting of the worst kind, a story which seems to have been written within ten minutes, extremely cheap sceneries (gravestones made of paper which the actors stumble over...) and ridiculous post-production. And best of all: it is not meant to be funny as in all these boring modern films, but completely involuntarily humor!

Playing Games

Kevin Jackson-Mead 2011
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 1/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Interpreter

Joining an exclusive game-playing club is not a simple affair. Every aspirant has to go through an aptitude test which starts out very much like one of these silly games which, if Hollywood movies are to be believed, are also required to join a fraternity: You're blindfolded, filled up with alcohol and left in the woods.

Tradewest Inc. 1993
Genre: Puzzle, Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: SNES

Meet Plok, a rather strange fellow. He has a flag fetish, hates fleas, can shoot off his arms and legs and absolutely hates fleas. Did I mention that he hates fleas? If not, then... well, you get the idea. Plok wakes up one sunny morning to find that his most prized possession, a big square flag, has been stolen. Our brave red-and-yellow hero decides to go flag hunting, and sees his flag hanging on an island just off the coast. When, after much adventure (a level or eight) he has finally recovered his flag, he returns to his island, only to find that it has been overrun with big, ugly fleas! Of course, our intrepid protagonist immediately vows to rid the island of fleas once and for all...

Police Quest II: The Vengeance

Sierra 1988
Genre: Adventure, Puzzle, Simulation
Rating: 6/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Just a year after releasing Sierra's masterpiece Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel, they released the follow-up to one of their finest series, Police Quest II: The Vengeance.

Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel

Sierra 1987
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

The shortest running of the common Sierra Adventures. Does that say anything about its quality? Come on, we're talking about Sierra! As if these sillyheads had ever cared about consumer wishes or producing quality products!

Pool 'm Up

Dommelsch 1999
Genre: Sport
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

If you're looking for a realistic and strategic pool simulation don't bother reading on because this game is more like an arcade game. But nevertheless it's great fun and it's freeware so there are no legal doubts ;)

Pool of Radiance

SSI 1988
Genre: RPG
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: PC

Well, this is a classic. The first of the Gold Box games, and must say it shines. Not that it is perfect, but as a start it surely is great. Leaving you in charge of a team of adventures who must get rid of all the bad guys, it looks like a great way to adapt D&D into computer.

Lacral 1988
Genre: Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

Is it Breakout? Is it Arkanoid? No, it's PopCorn! Whaat?! Yep, that's right. A French response from Lacral to all ye bat-and-ball addicts out there! Your mission here is as usual to do away with all the bricks you can see in the game while avoiding nasties, avoiding losing the ball, and finally come out a winner. Ready? Go! A little renowned but by no means inferior 'breakanoid' so to speak, as it sure does have quite a lot to offer, includes all the evolved features of the preceding versions and despite its failed glory it yet has the full privelege of being placed in the same camp among other successful products that truly defined the Breakout-style gaming.
