Italy 1990

italy199001.png
U.S. Gold 1990
Genre: Sport, Action
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

Just like movie tie-ins, 'official' games of major sport events are crap in most cases. After paying for the expensive licence, little money seems to be left to make a decent game. Or, maybe the companies think it won't be important anyway, because fans will buy the game just because of the name.

Ivanhoe

ivanhoe00.png
Ocean 1990
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

You walk from left to right and kill a few enemies. Sounds like Super Mario World? Maybe, but it's not! And it's not even something similar! It's Ivanhoe!

The 'story' is quite simple: King Richard has been captured by the French and you have to rescue him. Alone. You start your quest in England. There you have to get to the port. Unfortunately, a forest full of villains lies in the way. So you have no other choice but to fight your way through. You draw your sword and show them what you're made of! These weak peasants are no match for you! Some hits with your blade and they fall to the ground dead. Also those cowards hiding in the trees won't escape you!

James Pond II: Codename Robocod

pond2_48.png
Millenium 1991
Genre: Action
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

Compared to the first part, James Pond 2 may appear to be a step backwards. In many ways, it's a much more conventional game. Where the predecessor set itself apart from the usual Jump 'n' Run genre by having a fish as a protagonist, the challenge to the player was indeed a little bit different. This game has James put on a special armour which enables him to get out of the water so that he's now been turned into yet another common genre character.

Jonathan

jonathan01.png
Phoenics C.R. / Software 2000 1993
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 1/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

Jonathan is a university student who still lives with his parents. The reason being that ever since an accident 11 years ago, he's been confined to a wheelchair. What he lacks in physical attributes, he makes up for with psychic powers: He's got minor telekinetic and clairvoyant abilities (which he doesn't really like to use) and he is the head of a clique of friends who, in their free time, like to solve mysteries. Their latest one: Jonathan has had nightmares hinting at an approaching evil and a magic book and a ring will play some role in preventing all of this.

Karamalz Cup

karamalz01.png
Art Department 1993
Genre: Sport, Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Amiga

Karamalz is a brand of Malzbier, so what we have here is a promotial game. Promotial games are mostly simple versions of classic arcade games or short Adventures. This one sticks out from the crowd by being a sports game. It's a surprisingly complex ice hockey simulation!

King's Quest 1: Quest for the Crown

kq1-01.png
Sierra 1990
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 0/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

You are Sir Graham, noble knight in some medieval kingdom at the court of the old King Whatever. The king apparantely has some magical powers, because he can control when he wants to die! And he has decided to walk over the Styx once he has finally gotten his collection of stereotype king-stuff (magical mirrors, unlimited treasure chests and such) complete. Lil' King is too busy sitting on his throne gazing at the walls to find the last three missing pieces himself, so he gives the job to one of the guys who always hang around in the castle grinning and saying 'yes, my lord': Sir Graham. In return, Graham is promised to inherit the crown.

Kult

kult01.png
Exxos 1989
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

In the far future. After a nuclear war, part of the human race has mutated and now form two new races: the Tuners who look human, but have PSI powers (reading other people's thoughts, telekinetic powers,...), and the Protozorqs, humans with lizardlike heads. The latter live in huge temples which inspire fear into passers-by. There are rumors about humans and Tuners disappearing into these without leaving a trace.

Lancelot

lancelot01.png
Level 9 Computing 1988
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

Sir Lancelot, the Brave - rescuing Prince Herbert from being married against his will and rescuing Sir Galahad from having sex with a castle full of virgins between sixteen and nineteen and a half... sorry, wrong story. Lancelot bases itself on Le Morte d'Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory, making it a slightly more serious take on the subject matter. Not that you'd guess from looking at the very Pythonic box cover.

Lemmings

lemmings01.png
Psygnosis 1990
Genre: Puzzle
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

Lemmings - widely regarded as one of the most influential, one of the most original and one of the best games ever. What could I possibly say about it what hasn't been said before? Even today, it is the epitome of the 'puzzle' genre - and I added this genre to this site just for this game. I recoded pages, made special images, defined scripts, all just to be able to present this game. So there has to be something special about it.

Lemmings 2: The Tribes

lemmings201.png
Psygnosis 1993
Genre: Puzzle
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

After they started milking the brand with lots of and lots of data disks, it became obvious there would have to be a real sequel to Lemmings to keep the fire alive. However, due to these data disks, how could that sequel just have been additional levels? Impossible - we need more!
