Fifteen Minutes

Ade McT 2014
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

When I saw this game in the Interactive Fiction Competition, I knew I would end up writing a review about it. Regular readers will know I'm a sucker for time travel stories. Although there are many different approaches to designing such a mechanic and weaving a plot around it, it is (in the good cases) always such an inherently logical construct which I can't help but admire!

Fightin' Spirit

Light Shock / neo 1996
Genre: Action
Rating: 5/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

Whenever there is a huge success somewhere, there will be "me too" imitations. And that is where some of the weirdest games spring from. Like for instance an Italian-made game published by an Austrian company which is so Japanese in style that even the English language is spoken with an east asian accent! Whether there is some sense to all of that or whether it is just because the developers thought this is the way "it has to be" will remain their secret.

Fighting Warrior

Melbourne House 1985
Genre: Action
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Commercial
System: ZX Spectrum

Princess Thaya has been kidnapped (doh, give me a break!) by the evil Pharaoh and it's your job to save her. Seriously now, how about you save a puppy or a grandma for a change?! Anyway, your champ is a master stick fighter (kendo?!) and as per hackneyed tradition you must walk a few meters to arrive at Pharaoh's temple where he is planning to sacrifice the princess to gods by burying her alive and en route fight various humanoid creatures summoned by the Pharaoh to hamper you.

Final Fight

Creative Materials / U.S. Gold 1991
Genre: Action
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

Metro City's new mayor, the former Street Fighter champion Haggar, has vouched to rid the city off crime. The Mad Gears (a local gang) aren't too thrilled by that prospect, so they've kidnapped Haggar's daugther Jessica to blackmail him. As either Haggar himself, Jessica's boyfriend or another random guy who happened to be hanging around at the gym, the player has to fights his way through the hordes of the Mad Gears to free her again. No real risk there, because for some reason, the evil guys won't kill her even when they're attacked...

Fire Fighter

Imagic 1982
Genre: Action
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Atari 2600

Fire is spreading in a warehouse. Just a warehouse, no big deal, so just one single firefighter is sent to take care of it. Actually, all the other firefighters are drunk at the moment. And the one which does come is most likely drunk as well, but he lost some silly drinking game and thus had to go. Then the shock: There's a man trapped on one of the upper floors, running around in panic! The player has to save him from being roasted alive.

Fish Bowl

Ethan Rupp & Joshua Rupp 2012
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Interpreter

Fish Bowl claims to be An Interactive Horror. Yet, the introductory text makes it seem like an absurdist comedy. Preparing for the worst, I brace myself… I find out I'm playing a 'drunk beachcomber'. There is no immediate goal to the game, except maybe to find out how this fish bowl came into my possession. Exploring the immediate surroundings, it does not really matter much anymore suddenly as I'm drawn into a consciously surreal adventure of self-recognition.

Fish Fillets

ALTAR Interactive 1998
Genre: Puzzle
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Freeware
System: PC

‘Pozor!’ the sharklike fish tries to warn me. But it’s already too late, the skull crashes on his goldfish friend and kills her. Time to restart the level and plan my steps more carefully. But before that I will take a break and tell you about this very unique puzzle game I am playing right now. Basically it’s an intriguing cross between Tetris, Soko-Ban and Boulder Dash. Oh and if you couldn’t already tell by the opening quote: It’s also from a smaller Czech indie developer. Therefore the fish only speak in Czech… fortunately with multilingual subtitles. Well, this does have a certain charm, doesn’t it? :D

Fishing Derby

Activision 1980
Genre: Sport, Action
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Atari 2600

Being better than your opponent. It's one of life's basic struggles, repeating itself over and over again. The fight to be the best, to gain glory and have the loser hang his head in shame and admit bitter defeat.

Fist +

Melbourne House 1988
Genre: Action, Sport
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: C64

The Way of the Exploding Fist was good. International Karate surpassed it, though. Fist 2 was absolutely awful. IK+ carried on the original legacy and intelligently extended the gameplay. Time to strike back!

Fist 2: The Legend Continues

Melbourne House 1986
Genre: Action
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Commercial
System: C64

Karate Champ, The Way of the Exploding Fist, International Karate - how can anyone manage to drive these great games into the ground? Is it even possible? Unfortunately, the answer is yes.

Fist 2 mixes the fighting style of the mentioned games with a more 'freestyle' approach (which would later become Double Dragon). Instead of duelling, the protagonist walks around freely in a landscape. From time to time, he meets an enemy whom he then beats up.
