Elefanten!

elefanten01.png
elefanten Schuh GmbH / WWF 1993
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Amiga

Oh, sweet childhood! Even for boys, there were ways of making shoe shopping (basically one of the most hated activities ever) into a true adventure. In one store chain, you got free comic books of Lurchi and the competition had you go on a safari (well, at least you could get a plush elephant)! It's the latter company (which has by now disappeared from the market) which is also responsible for this game: another attempt at acquiring customers in a playful way.

Elfmania

elfmania01.png
Terramarque / Renegade 1994
Genre: Action
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

All those people sneering at the thought of playing fighting games with a single-button joystick probably have never tried one which has been originally designed for it. Admittedly, many genre entries don't play all that well that way. Though those are usually ports of successful arcade cabinets or from game consoles equipped with multi-button gamepads. "Reducing" an existing control scheme well is a sometimes impossible task. Elfmania has been designed from scratch for a simpler control scheme, on the other hand.

Else we get mad!

Amiga Wave 2017
Genre: Action
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Amiga

When the Amiga was unveiled to the general public, the careers of Bud Spencer and Terence Hill were already on a clear downwards slope. Up until the early 1980s, their films had topped the European cinema charts regularly. Even today, they are quite present on TV, each time entertaining a returning audience. Their big run spanned more than a dozen films within just roughly 15 years. It isn't surprising that things became a little formulaic over time. One mainstay graced all those films in any case: the brawls!

Energie-Manager

Rauser / BWMi 1993
Genre: Strategy
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Freeware
System: Amiga

Just a little more than ten years ago (in 1993), there was no 'Internet' of today's proportions. Computer magazines coming with CDs full of stuff were still uncommon, too. To be exact, the first 'one-shot issues' of this kind appeared in early 1994 in Germany. So, 1993 was still a year of game demos being spread on floppy disks, and those were available on quite a few magazine covers.

Epic: The Adventure Begins

epic01.png
Digital Image Design / Ocean 1992
Genre: Simulation, Action
Rating: 1/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

Epic – announced and hailed as a Wing Commander killer… and at release, it was actually well-received by most of the mainstream press. Apart from a couple of minor voices spoiling the party. In spite of a well-known development team which had already been responsible for the well received F29 Retaliator and would go on to universally lauded simulations such as TFX. What went wrong with this one?

European Soccer Challenge

Euro01.png
Software Sorcery / Smash 16 1990
Genre: Action, Sport
Rating: 1/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga
This is one of those games which illustrate how much the world has changed in the last 30 years. How much people and their habits have changed. I got European Soccer Challenge as a gift. There were two ways it could go with gift-givers of an older generation when it came to computer games. First, clearly preferred by the potential recipients, they could be asked for a wish list. Second, something would just be bought. Based on… game theme and cover presumably. So me and my brothers found ourselves the lucky owners of a copy of this game.

Eye of the Beholder

beholder01.png
Westwood / SSI 1991
Genre: RPG
Rating: 3/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

There's something fishy going on in the city of Waterdeep. The Lords of the city have traced the source of the problems to the underground catacombs and a party of four heroes is commissioned to investigate. Immediately, they are trapped with the ceiling collapsing at the entrance. So now, the four are on their own with no outside help or supplies available. The only direction to go in is down...

Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon

beholder201.png
Westwood / SSI 1992
Genre: RPG
Rating: 4/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

The heroes of Waterdeep are back: Evil emanates from the temple of Darkmoon this time... a huge building full of priests and monks (very typical source of evil) and - as it turns out - with a complex system of catacombs beneath. What are these people up to?

Fallen Empire

fallen_empire01.png
Midnight / Mirage 1993
Genre: Action, Strategy
Rating: -
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga
This is a German 1993 re-release of Ashes of Empire. Nothing but the title has changed.

Fascination

fascination00.png
Coktel Vision 1992
Genre: Adventure
Rating: 2/6
Licence: Commercial
System: Amiga

A French 'erotic' adventure game called Fascination? No, in spite of what you might expect, this one has absolutely no relation to Jean Rollin's nudie vampire film from the late 70s. Pity, because it would have truly fascinating to see someone trying to adapt that… surreal experience…
