What is a M.U.L.E.? It stands for Multiple Use Labor Element, the robotic backbone of the economy on planet Irata which is about to be colonized by members of different alien races. And, well, from human history, we all know what 'colonisation' implies: Grabbing land before anyone else does, exploiting it for profit and when you've milked it dry, move on – leaving political and economical chaos behind.


Mad News

Mad TV's success virtually begged for a sequel. Rainbow Arts announced Mad Burger, a fast-food chain simulator. Ralph Stock, designer of the first part, had left the company, though, and he was working in Mad News which was published by Ikarion. Mad Burger never made it, but two years later, Mad TV 2 (the only 'official' sequel) appeared - and it sucked. This review is about Mad News, however. The game which should probably be called the only rightful successor of the original game.

This is one of the few german games which got much international attention. And it really deserved it. Basically, it's a pretty tipically german genre: a business sim. But in contrast to lame tries like Winzer this one is really fun! The reasons for this are simple.


Mad TV 2

Who didn't think about opening one's own TV station and broadcasting one's favourite movies without commercial breaks? Well, then you've come to the right place with Mad TV / Mad TV 2. The successful game's sequel is good for some discussion and different from the predecessor, it is not about conquering Betty Botterbloom, but really just about building up a successful TV station. (We already successfully got rid of her again in Mad News after all and now we're happy to be single again ;) )


Mafia

You may smile ironically about the graphics of C64 games. You may even consider them ugly. I won't protest much. In fact, I have to confess I don't value the 'multimedia' capabilities of this computer too highly myself. I can understand everyone who appreciates these extremely blocky looks, but I've been 'socialized' by other machines mainly. One thing is undeniable, though: The C64 had and still has the most creative 'user scene'! Even today, new programs are being written by the followers of this small computer, some even released commercially.

A safe way for a game to become successful back in the 'golden days' was to get good reviews in the magazines dealing with computer games. Most companies went with simple bribery (even though you never believed this of course, eh?).


Monopolize

Monopoly... Monopoly... what was that again? Ah come on - you KNOW what Monopoly is! It's the pure capitalistic board game where you buy streets, railroad stations and similar and build houses and hotels charging your fellow players money if they dare to cross your streets. Sounds a bit... strange explaining it like that, but basically that is how Monopoly works. The players roll the dice and the street (or building) they land on can be bought if noone else owns it - if the latter is the case... it is indeed as I said before: You have to pay for setting your foot on it. If you own the street you land on you can build a house there - or a hotel if there are already four houses present. If you land on a railroadstation or the electric or water works you cannot build anything there. That's the rules in a nutshell.


Paperboy

Paper delivery is a common way of increasing your pocket money. At least I guess it is in the USA. This game is the ultimate simulator of this thrilling job. You can use it to evaluate if this job suits your abilities and interests or for training purposes to improve your service.


Paperboy 2

Paperboy... in the 1990s? Is it the long-awaited sequel taking the basic concept to new heights? In one word: no.

The player controls a paperboy (or, major new feature, a papergirl) on his/her round. Papers have to be thrown into subsribers' mailboxes (no stopping to stuff it in there) and new papers have to be picked up along the way, because why give the stupid paperboy enough papers for all subscribers if bundles of them are lying around on the street anyway? Which kind of defeats the whole premise, because why don't the subscribers just take their paper from those bundles?

Sometimes, one small idea is enough to make a good game. Kaiser is a great C64 classic many people know. There are also lots of remakes. Only few of those tried to expand the gameplay, though.
