Ur-Quan Masters HD MOD
Ur-Quan Masters HD MOD is up! I played it for 10 minutes or so, and the graphics overhaul is a welcome addition.
Btw: Your link doesn't work. Probably should be The Ur-Quan Masters Forum: HD Mod?
Oh...my bad. I didn't check if it copied correctly, just cut'n'paste. But you got there in the end. =)
It is a really cool fanbase. I'm excited for the upgrade. But yes, if you're going to play this game I suggest downloading the Ur-Quan Masters remake of Star Control II for the PC. Its basically a hacked copy of the 3DO version, which adds speech, better graphics and a few other enhancements. And now even better graphics when this fan-made mod comes out. Truly an A+++ game.
Now that's what I call a dedicated fan-base! Looks really nice (though the original graphics weren't all that bad too).

I actually did a lot of practising in the melee mode, but I stilled sucked at it. My main gripe were the weird zoom effects, which somehow always threw me off balance. Also, for space fights, I either prefer turn based combat or sitting directly in the cockpit of a fighter.
Sounds great! Do you have any more infos in this?
Below is the link to the forum thread. There's some VERY talented artist recreating in-game screens in HD. The artwork is quite professional IMO.

Thanks for the hints, will keep them in mind, when I start it up again.

The action sequences were a good part of the game. You can try out Melee mode that just pits you against the computer. Each ship has its strengths and weaknesses, and some battles are outright unfair with paired ships.
One hint you can do, and I don't know if StarConII has this in the Melee feature, is to do Melee mode and have the computer play both sides. That way you can see the strategies used for each ship.
I typically didn't use many of the alien ships besides the precursor vessel, but having a couple Earthling cruisers and Chmrr Avatars was always handy.
Another hint to the game is max out on ships that hold a lot of crew (Chmmr Avatar had 42, Spathi Eluder 30) so you can transfer those crews back to your precursor vessel so you didn't have to waste much on crew pods.
The Ur-Quan Masters remake (I highly recommend) has a mod coming out that has HD artwork/etc. The last time I checked on it (a few days ago) the comment was made by the 31st of December 2012 (this year!) or very very early January. I can't wait...literally, since I'm playing StarConII right now. =)
Also, I might upload a map file that I made that helps you plot out the hyperspace/quasispace portals easily. If I can only find the damn thing...
