I loved playing this as a child and yes it was exactly for the reasons quoted in the review, that is the funny animations. Did not take it all that seriously though, because I cheated a lot (I think you can place the pieces yourself? Or at least you can make the AI super dumb).

Yet on those rare occasions I gave it a try later on, I noticed how this is the one and only gimmick Battle Chess has to offer, and it did not really hold up.
