Ultimate Steroids is another excellent Asteroids freeware clone, with more graphics pizzazz than Disasteroids 3D. Basically, you pilot the spaceship from a first-person perspective, shooting asteroids that get in the way. You can collect power-ups to increase firepower, and will also have to deal with non-asteroid obstacles such as aliens and black holes.

The highlight of the game, as one would expect from an Asteroids clone, is nonstop arcade fun set in outstanding OpenGL accelerated 3D graphics. You can collect up to 10 weapon power-ups through a total of 22 levels—many more than most other clones. There is also a support for two players, either in a co-operation or in a competition. The competition mode allows you to set various gameplay settings so you can fine-tune the game to your preferences and skill level.

One of the nice “extras” in Ultimate Steroids is the excellent MOD player. Similar to Plasmaworm, the game allows you to use your own music in the game. This is done simply by placing the tracks you want in the “Music” folder. There is room for 128 MODs, and the only limitation is that they must be MOD, S3M, XM or IT formats. If you don't have any MODs lying around, The Mod Archive is a good place to start.

With an excellent gameplay and great graphics and music, Ultimate Steroids is one of the best Asteroids clones you will ever play. Best of all, it’s free ;) Two thumbs up, way up!
