Review by Underdogs:
Perfect Checkmate is a decent, but by all means special, chess program from Gunnar Games and Expert Software. Apart from nice 2D and 3D graphics, over one dozen board designs, and a mouse-based interface, the game's best feature is a vast library: 3,000 classic games for your perusal, as well as dozens of opening books. There is a nice tutorial mode, customized computer opponents with digitized speech, and a full range of multiplayer support including LAN, TCP/IP, and hotseat. I also like the "rating" option that lets the program rates your games - as well as a host of limitations that make cheating difficult (after all, if you want to get rated, you might as well be honest ;)). For instance, you are not allowed to quit in the middle of a rated game without having that game marked as a "loss" on your record. You also cannot use hints and other options that may aid your game. All in all, a nice enough game that chess gamers should have no complaint about - but also lacks any innovative or unique features to stand out in a very crowded genre.
