Hi guys,

I'm Peter from the Netherlands and I've been a computer/hardware addict since the mid eighties :-) My interest is pretty broad, which is why I've used a wide variety of machines from Apple to ZX Spectrum, but the Commodore 64 and Amiga are my favourites. I remember first seeing my friends Amiga 2000 in action in 1987 and I was blown away as a 7 year old. This amazing machine lit the spark so to say ;-) I've been collecting old machines for about twenty years and I recently aquired a lovely Tandy 1000HX. (which is my 40th computer :-) I particularly like this machine as it's a brilliant crossover between an IBM PC and a home computer. It's a great machine to rediscover the old games I played in the eighties with it's enhanced graphics and sound capabilities. I'd love to download the patched version of Alleycat here, a game I played so much on my Dad's PC that the loud sounds from its beeper drove him nuts ;-)

Yeah, those constant loud bleeps and bloops from our Tulip Compact 2 (a Dutch machine of course ) drove everyone crazy in and around the house.
My reaction to it nowadays is a mixed feeling of nostalgia and repulsion (like my dad at the time), kind of the same thing with some of the RGBI CGA color palettes: You love it for its sentimental value but hate it at the same time, because aesthetically it makes no sense whatsoever and can get pretty ugly, especially the infamous high intensity palette 1 (cyan, magenta, white, black) ;-) I guess it's all about gameplay at which Alleycat was quite brilliant for its time (1984!)..

Alley Cat was one of the very first games I tried to play on my first PC but it wouldn't run because I had a Hercules compatible graphics card and I used a CGA emulator, called HGCIBM which I got from a friend and made me able to start the game, at which point 9-year old me did a little victory dance. Too bad the windows wouldn't open because of bad emulation or maybe direct BIOS-calls to the CGA in the game.. Merely jumping on the trashbins and only catching some meagre mice on the washing lines, without being able to get into the house, let alone visit my little lover pussycat doll got old pretty fast Didn't get hit by telephones or metal rods though
Getting the game to work and the game itself became kind of an obsession to me: It just had to work, no matter the cost haha ;-) It kind of was my first obsession and definitely not my last, because my work today evolves around similar borderline situations ;-) Having a "condition" like this helps when your daily job is troubleshooting and diagnosing problems.. It just gets personal you know?

I later figured out that the graphics adapter my dad bought was in fact a Tulip DGA-card, a dual graphics adapter that could actually display CGA natively.
I remember I used to dream about seeing colour on this actual machine. In my dreams there seemed to be thousands of colours, like a nice plasma demo or something :-)
You can imagine my reaction when 9 year old me discovered the machine could actually display color and I could in fact run Alleycat natively!
I was stoked to see Tandycat on youtube, given I own a lovely Tandy and my personal history with the game.
I also still own the Tulip machine and I was stoked to see it in fact displaying thousands of colors through a home made composite output on this exact same config in the excellent 8088MPH demo without any hardware mods!

I remember also craving for some real sound out of this 1987 Tulip PC Compact 2 and at one point I even amplified its internal speaker to hear digitized sounds like the ones on the excellent French Loriciels games and phonemes-based speech better, which was a bad idea because a shrieking pulse width modulated audio with 1-bit resolution through a hifi-set apparantly doesn't make it any more bearable (what do you know as a 9 year old?). If you amplify crap, you just get really loud crap ;-)
My friends all had C64s and Amigas so I got pretty jealous, which is why my first Soundblaster Pro compatible card I purchased in 1994 was a godsend! :-)
I now have a Soundblaster 1.5 with CMS chipset, an XT-IDE and an original EGA card (+monitor) in the thing, which makes it excellent for old games

I managed to patch a lot of games, like the Loriciels games like Mach3 to play their sound through a Covox DAC. It redirects the bitstream output from the PC speaker to LPT1:
Quite a nice experiment. I have a PS/2 Model 30 8086, filled with Covox-games like these just for experiment's sake but I'm going to sell it because 3 PS/2s is too much..

I still remember the good old days when I was sitting in front of a TV watching the flickering of ZX81 cassette game loading (and trying again, because something went wrong )

The c64 is one of my best gaming memories with game designs that are painfully missed today. As a gamer, I, of course, continued to play on the Amiga and PC.

Hopefully, some memory become alive here...

Just found this place through looking for old Sherlock Holms games that don't appear to be sold anymore. I remember playing old computer games in the 80's on my Packard bell and Tandy. I really love the point and click adventure game types that don't seem to be popular anymore.

I am Telev from Belgium and I am 43 years old.
I do not remember my very first computer, in 1990 I was 12 years old, was a Nashuatec with a DOS 3.1 if I remember correctly. I spent a lot of time on Space Invader and Pacman. Subsequently I had a 386sx33 followed by a 486dx33. With these machines I spent many hours on Fomula One Grand Prix, as well as the Alone in the dark series. And then I discovered the point & click from LucasArt.
I still play regularly at Monkey Island or day of the tentacle. Great games.

That's quite a jump, from Space Invaders and Pacman (1970s arcade games) straight to F1GP and Alone in the Dark! Seems you basically missed the complete 80s

beginning with my C64 in 1983 ...
always in used, with about 300 disks in restoring action to d64 image
so collecting software for pleasure !
also collecting Old PC hardware PC 8088-02 TRAN Jasmin Clone / 286 / 386 and soo one,
more than 30 units + 02 servers DELL & IBM
