Comics talk

Las week, I bought the first issue of Thundercats. After G.I. Joe and Transformers, this is yet another 80s resurrection. The comics has brought me straight back to the 80s - the same inept story, the same graphics, even the cheesy lines remained the same. I know that Masters of the Universe are in production, but I'm wondering what's coming next: the Smurfs, maybe?

Maybe a bit off-topic, but I watched the first three episodes of the new Master of the Universe cartoon two days ago. That was not retro, but incredibly 90s :(

No. The '00s don't have their own style, everything is still 90s :(

To us, it'll be like the 90's for a LONG, LONG while, since that's where our childhood was :) I 1991 sounds new, 1989 sounds old. That kind of stuff. Maybe after 2005 we'll get that '00 feeling ;)

Hmm... no. 1989 and 1991 both sound like the same 'oldness' to me. And somehow, I don't count the 90s as my 'childhood' anymore. Everything in that decade was just crap :(

To get back to the topic: isn't a comic which seems to come straight out of the 80s something positive? I mean, what have the 90s brought us? Anime. Urgh :pain: Whiny 'heroic monsters' in whose series everything is all about showing as much spurting blood as possible (Spawn, Blade,....) because that is what teens considered 'cool' :pain: Isn't it a positive trend that at least some people go back to the 'old values'? After all, the 80s did have some real highlights, way more than the 90s (which had... the Sandman and that's it :()!

You seem to have prejudice against anime. Not all anime is aimed at gore, you know..

I'm not prejudiced, I'm just observing facts about Anime: it's ugly, everyone looks like a fetus, people are always running over psychedelic hills. The stories always circle around very few motifs: giant robots battling, kids being raped or 'real-life'. The latter is then always something completely incomprehensible about 'family honour', revenge, people are always committing suicide all the time. I don't see how anyone from a 'western culture' should be able to follow this.

There you see it - completely objective :P

There's about as much good anime as there is good non-anime movies and series. Once you get over the animation style and concentrate on the story, you'll see...

The only time I can't tolerate anime is in computer games

Strange. Most anime's which are coming out lately are about growing up. High school comedies. No rapes in any of the 40+ series I have here, and no rapes in any of the 14+ movies I have here either. Only 2 series with big battle mechs, and one movie.

You're still not informed enough, Creo. I'm not informed enough about the comics you talk about here but you haven't given anime a fair chance. You don't have to - but don't claim you know it as good as anyone and can judge it correctly, since you know only the commonly known stereotypes.

NetDanzr: I will never get over such crappy artwork

Voh: I covered the 'growing up' storylines in my 'real life / suicide / family honor' part - you see, I'm perfectly informed ;)

Read the first two issues of the League of Extraordinary Gentlement Vol. 2 now and it indeed looks good so far. The War of the Worls - theme is somehow less original than the first series until now, but I'm sure there will be some surprises in stock - after all, Mr M. was only revealed in issue 4 (or even 5 if you're not good a drawing conclusions) of the first series, too :D

The only time I can stand anime is from the 80's series like Creosote said, or in console games...

Anime console games are at least 400% better than those "suposedly" 3D games, since they don't try nor claim to do 3D when they will never be able to do so until they create holographics... Proof of what I'm saying is that the best efforts and realization of "3D" so far come from the kind of movies as "Shrek", and that's not even 3D; that's anime with some 3D elements added in...

Yes, I might be prejudicied against 3D graphics, but only when it come to animating a person. 3D graphics of unanimated objects such as space vessels are usually well done :)

Hmm... are you sure you mean Anime, the Japanese style of drawing and not comic style in general?
