Member Prof Gumby Posts: 607 | Is there any way you can update the JavaScript support in Opera? Both the Java and Non-Java versions should have this, and I've tried them both, but I get a lot of funny errors on pages that work fine in MSIE... If you have Opera and don't know what I mean, enable the JavaScript error reporting in the Preferences and check http://stubru.be (you probably won't understand a word of this page, but that doesn't matter)... This is the site of Belgium's #1 radio station, and I consult their playlists a lot, but trying to access the archive by selecting anything in the menu in the upper right corner just won't work... and neither will the scrollbar in the left side menu... they both work fine in IE though... Is this problem fixable or just an inherent flaw of the Opera browser? If it weren't for these errors I wouldn't need IE anymore so any workarounds would be greatly appreciated... ----- "One Very Important Thought" |

Member Retired Gumby Posts: 1007 | Sorry, no workaround. MSIE uses its own standard, JScript, which is quite different from JavaScript. You've got two choices: be pissed off and self-righteously refuse to visit all sites that use non-standard coding (such as microsoft.com and stubru.com), or use MSIE for such sites... Just off-topic: does that Brussel radio station with a dolphin in its logo still exist? If yes, where can I find it? ----- NetDanzr<br /> -The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog- |

Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11166 | I'm not that good at JavaScript, but I suspect what you get an error with is just JScript declared as JavaScript. No wonder it doesn't work then. ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |

Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11166 | As for the options what to do, I'd go with the first one NetDanzr proposed and in addition write a nasty e-mail to this radio station ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |

Member Prof Gumby Posts: 607 | Well, thanks for clearing that up anyway NetDanzr: The only station in Belgium I know of that has a dolphin in their logo, is Radio Contact... you can listen to it at http://www.radiocontact.be (a site which by the way also refuses to work in Opera )... I hope it's the station you were referring to... ----- "One Very Important Thought" |

Member Retired Gumby Posts: 740 | This is why I don't use opera, MANY pages don't work or appear right in opera. Opera adheres too strictly to the wc3 standards. I suggest switching to either mozilla/multizilla or Crazy Browser. Both will give you comperable features to opera, but will actually function properly. Crazy browser uses the IE engine, so anything the looks/works correctly ine IE should be fine in crazy browser. ----- At the end of the day, you're left with a bent fork & a pissed off rhino. |

Member Retired Gumby Posts: 1007 | Are you trying to say that Opera doesn't work properly only because it follows the standard rules? That's like saying that a person that follows traffic laws doesn't drive right... ----- NetDanzr<br /> -The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog- |

Member Retired Gumby Posts: 740 | Technically, the problem is that the authors of websites don't adhere to the rules enough. The fact remains however, that if you use opera you will have many problems trying to view websites. If you use nearly any other available browser though, 99% of sites will work fine. The question that needs to be asked now, is why is opera the ONLY browser that has this issue? ----- At the end of the day, you're left with a bent fork & a pissed off rhino. |

Admin Reborn Gumby Posts: 11166 | I can view more than 99% of all websites fine in Opera. What you're claiming was valid prior to Opera 5. ----- Now you see the violence inherent in the system! |

Member Retired Gumby Posts: 1007 | I don't mind the fact that there are sites I can't visit. I simply don't go there... What I like about Opera, though, is the fact that if I test a page there, it is most likely to be fully functional with any other major browser... Oh, and one interesting statistics. Opera has a default setting to appear as MSIE 5. The stats software on my personal site is able to distinguish the disguise and count visitors with Opera properly. Out of 30,000 hits last month, 7.73% of visitors used an Opera 6.x version (most of them 6.04). That's way higher what official statistics say, which handle disguised Opera as MSIE 5. ----- NetDanzr<br /> -The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog- |

Member Prof Gumby Posts: 607 | I'm downloading Mozilla/Multizilla now to give it a try; I never did so before because I thought Mozilla was a heavy hitter on the system resources but I'll give it a try anyway... especially since Cypherswipe is right: this does happen with a lot of pages in Opera ----- "One Very Important Thought" |
