All computer games illegal?

On July, 30th, a new law has been put into action in Greece. It is aimed at banning gambling in casinos which obviously has led to the ruin of many people there.
The law's text is so general that it apparantely can be applied to all kinds of games, including computer games, internet game, console games, games played on cell phones and so on - even if it's not in any way gambling related!
Just recently, police 'stormed' an Internet cafe and arrested the owner because some people there played online games.

First petitions have been set up. And in case you think this is a joke, read the full story here.

Old news. Actually, I read somewhere that a few people (including a British tourist) were fined. The tourist didn't know about the law and was actually playing on a handheld on the beach...

Read carefully - I didn't deny that ? It's just that it came up again now that the first Internet cafés were actually shut down...

What is the world coming to? What's next? A ban on watching television? For Gods sake, what were these politicians thinking when they wrote this law? "Let's make it as vague as possible so that nobody knows what we really want? God forbid that we actually would do something usefull for a change..."

They thought: "These people were dumb enough to vote for us, therefore they will be dumb enough to accept this law".

I heard about this a while back, I just laughed. It gives a whole new meaning to the word democracy.

Imagine being arrested for playing Snake on your cell phone :doubt:

I just hope this law will get more precise in time... unless of course they intended it to apply to all that other stuff too... :worried:

Actually, someone was arrested precisely for that: playing a game on a cell phone, but that was unrelated to the situation in Greece:

Quote:
Cell Game Lands User in the Clink [9/10/2002 12:41:41 PM ET]
A judge in England sentenced a man to four months in prison for repeatedly ignoring warnings to turn off his cell phone during a flight from Luxor, Egypt to Manchester, England.
Airlines routinely ask that mobile phones be switched off because of the risk they can interfere with a planes electrical system. Faiz Chopdat, age 23, refused to comply, wishing to continue playing a videogame he had running on his phone.
For his negligence, Chopdat was sentenced to four months in prison, narrowly avoiding a two-year maximum sentence.
Chopdat's lawyer stated that his client was returning from his honeymoon and was feeling "some sort of bravado."

Meanwhile, a court in Greece has declared the law unconstitutional, so for now gamers are safe there ;).

I can understand why this guy was arrested. By not turning off his mobile, he was endagering the entire flight. I know jack of aeroflight so I wouldn't know how big the increase in risk is (probably virtually none if it is a single case) when someone doesn't comply but I suppose these regulations however lame, are there for a reason. And how hard is it if they ask you repeatidly to turn of your mobile to actually do it?

Glad to hear this about that law in Greece. As you might have derived from my first post in this thread, it kinda ticked me off to see a government getting away with something so dictatorial in a so-called democratic system...

I'm actually thinking about taking my hiking stick with me into movie theaters and clubbing people who use cell phones during movies...

People who use phones during movies grrr
The least you can do is put it on silent and then ring back the missed calls after the movie.
Sometimes you feel like more than just clubbing people who talk on phones during movies.

Bah! I would like to see this Greek law applied everywhere - because now that I'm living so boringly legal on the Internet, I have to compensate that somehow :o

I know I'm a relative newbie to this scene but AFAIK any AB-site is illegal... copyright-law still states that unless otherwise specified, copyrights are valid for 75 years so if you distribute a game freely (as the good old days do), you are violating a law and are hence active in illegal activities no matter how you turn it... It's not because the authors/publishers of some games allow it to happen that is's legal... I could drink beer from the age of 10 here in belgium but that wasn't legal either so Creo, before you go around bullying people about getting the facts, think twice yourself, ok?

No offense intended
